I'd like to hear them cover the devil went down to georgia by charlie parker daniels, or house of the rising sun by the animals... Anybody else have any songs you think would be cool if MBD covered them?

i was thrilled out of my mind when they did a Smashing Pumpkins cover. i think "House of the Rising Sun" would be incredible.

Smashing Pumpkins are ama-za-zing... and Muse covered that song pretty well. A lot of people tend to cover them, but I'd seriously like to hear MBD cover something really weird for themselves.. like RHCP or Madonna. =p

Oh man, it would be a dream come true to hear them play the devil went to georgia.
Actually, I think I would love to hear them cover Toxic (britany spears). Nickel Creek covered that song and it was amazing. I bet mbd could do it even better.

they covered Guns and Roses in San Diego once and it rocked, sarah did Slash's guitar solo w/ her cello, it sounded really, really, really, really cool. seriously, it was cool as hell.

The bowie cover of 5 years on the 7 inch for their friend matt and ten grand was a really cool song. the other song on that 7" is real cool too.

I actually figured out the one I'd like to hear most..."Walking On A Wire" by The Get Up Kids. Favorite song ever, and if they still had a piano player, they could do a badass cover with Sarah handling the lead guitar. That shit would be off the hook.

I think it would rock to hear them play the devil goes down to georgia!
but even beter if they played straight after the johnny cash version
(if you havnt heard it, its like a part2 of the song, all about the devil challenging the fiddle player over again etc)
now THAT shit would be off the hook.
i think they could do a mean rendition of minnie the moocher.
(btw bill they've done don't cry, it on the vinyl b-side of brother)

I must apologize in advance; this post is really long. I had an idea.
My first thoughts were things like "The Mercy Seat"(Cave), "Red
Right Hand"(Cave), "29 Minutes to Go"(Cash) etc.
Upon reflection, though, I think that the band might, at least for the time being, be wise to steer clear of covering those artists and other artists to whom they're so frequently compared. They have been influenced by those that came before and that's not meant as a knock--we all stand on the shoulders of giants--but they have built something new on that foundation and they need to keep moving forward.
I mean, MBD doesn't have to cover "The Mercy Seat" or "29 Minutes to Go." They already wrote about that subject and did quite well at it. The danger of doing so is not just stagnation, but also getting pushed into a narrow category. They're not a tribute band and if they cover too many songs from those artists at this point, they risk being treated like one. This would be a great loss to music.
I also believe that a good cover holds a song up to a different light and finds something new in it. I'd love to hear something taken completely out of context, something by the Dresden Dolls, or the Beatles, or even something completely off the wall; Modern English or Madonna or something.
Sorry so wordy; it's a character flaw.

Also, do they have any cover songs already I could listen to?

I think this has been mentioned before, but to answer your question adam does a cover of my baby shot me down on the HIPS compilation.
I really recommend picking it up, it's a really really good comp and has bands such as mates of state, mirah, and bellafea.
if you're looking for individual tracks, though, besides the track by adam, check out the tracks by delta dart, black diamonds, and fated fury. they're my faves.
I don't know of cover songs by the full band, but if there are any out there I'd love to hear them!

honestly no matter how many times i listen to "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash i can't help but think that MBD could have covered it, put it on Bocca and have had it fit perfectly into the whole Inferno theme.
...and i know the comparison has been made (between JC's and Adam's voices) but this song would be an incredible live sing along.

a mars volta cover would be interesting. not sure what song. hard to translate that music to their instrument line-up... the widow might work well, as much as i dislike that song (at least compared to their other stuff). televators maybe. or go balls out and do take the veil.
or elton john's rocket man.

haha, that was mostly a joke. i needed something to counter the mars volta ideas, and my roommate had just been talking about an elton john concert he went to.
anything by the red paintings would be rad MBD style. awesome band for those who don't know them, which if this board is anything like the general american populace would be all of you. aussie band with weird conceptual EP's, a string duet, and people painting (canvases and other mostly naked people) on stage.
also, holst's mars would be sweet.

Now that I think of it, there is one Johnny Cash song I'd like to hear: Delia's Gone is a Johnny Cash song but he was clearly channneling Robert Browning at the time, so it's okay. I'd really love to hear them do a murder ballad of that type. You know, like that or Pretty Polly or Knoxville Girl.
Long Black Veil is a natural for them too, but it's been done to death and it doesn't have the psycho factor of the others I mentioned. .
